“Ada 'Bricktop’ Smith met Langston Hughes in Paris in 1924, at the first nightclub where she ever performed. He was working there as a busboy. Social and magnetic, Ada soon opened her own Chez Bricktop, a favorite spot for Gertude Stein and Ernest Hemingway, where she booked the likes of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Django. F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, ‘My greatest claim to fame is that I met Bricktop before Cole Porter.’ Django wrote a song about her called ‘Bricktop.’”

He introduced her to Paul Strand, another young artist, and Georgia and Paul began a passionate correspondence, Georgia once writing that she had to be naked when she composed her letters because he caused her to overheat. Years later, Alfred had an affair of his own with Paul’s wife, Beck. Georgia then followed suit.”

“After a brief affair in Hollywood in 1951, Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe wed in 1956, with Lee Strasberg, her famous acting teacher, giving her away. The relationship began to deteriorate almost immediately, as Arthur was unable to deal with her depression and addictions. In an attempt to help her career, he wrote a serious role for her in The Misfits. It ended up being the last film for both Marilyn and her co-star, Clark Gable. Arthur and Marilyn divorced in 1961, less than two years before her suicide. Arthur’s next play, After the Fall, depicted a tortured relationship that seemed familiar. It was poorly reviewed.”
